Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw

Who We Are

Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County has been dedicated to improving the lives of our community's most vulnerable citizens since 1959. Serving thousands of individuals and families each year, Agency programs reflect the diversity of our community: adoption and pregnancy counseling, food assistance, homelessness prevention, domestic and child abuse intervention and prevention, family therapy, and services designed to assist older adults, individuals with developmental disabilities, and at-risk families with young children.

Catholic Social Services Celebrates 50th Anniversary

It has been a half century since Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County (CSSW) opened
its doors offering counseling and adoption services. We were small, but our mission was ambitious.

In 1959, Americans were gathered around their black and white TVs watching game shows and westerns while teens were listening to Elvis. Alaska and Hawaii entered the union that year. Xerox rolled out the very first copy machine. Five decades later hundreds of cable channels and modes of communication from laptops to cell phones and interactive car media make the world instantly accessible.

Times have changed and Catholic Social Services has responded. Today we offer dozens of programs helping thousands in our community each year - those at risk of homelessness, the very young, older adults, victims of abuse, adults with cognitive impairments - individuals of all ages and all faiths. But one thing hasn’t changed since 1959. Our clients then and now come to us seeking a helping hand; they leave with the ability to confront their challenges.

Fifty years. A time to reflect, a time to celebrate. Learn more about our history and how you can join CSSW as we honor the past and plan for our future...
