Safe Sleep

September 6, 2017 by Sarah Rassoul

Sweet Dreams

Baby sleeping on his back

Being a baby is hard work. Caring for one is even harder. And ensuring a baby is sleeping safely is just one of the countless challenges facing caregivers of infants. Nobody wants to think about it, but the tragedy of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) descends on a new Michigan family every other day.*

That’s why the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has designated September as Safe Sleep Awareness Month. Here are their recommendations for giving a baby the best, safest sleep:

  • Place your baby on their back, in a crib, bassinet or pack-n-play for every sleep time.
  • Use a firm mattress with a tightly fitted sheet.
  • Keep baby’s sleep space clutter free – no pillows, blankets or toys.
  • Avoid covering baby’s head or overheating.  Instead of a blanket, consider using a sleep sack, wearable blanket or footed sleeper to keep baby warm.
  • Remind everyone who cares for your baby, including babysitters and family members, how to keep baby safe while sleeping.

Babies are in danger when they are asleep:

  • On anything too soft, such as a couch or a pillow.
  • With other children, adults, or pets
  • In an adult bed.

Teaching safe sleep methods is just one of the ways CSSW promotes the health and well-being of infants and young children. Our Pregnancy Counseling and Nurturing Families programs provide in-depth, up-to-date information and advice for new and expecting parents, for free.
